NEWS & DISCUSSION

Demi Moore missing Torso
The photo shows the natural standing pose... of a runway model in her mid-twenties. It appears that Demi Moore's head, legs, and arms were superimposed on the hips and torso of model Anja Rubik.
Steve says this thing happens all the time. Retouchers are more important than photographers.

Ron: This may be more of an issue of wanting a different dress or a different pose and not that they don't like her body. More of an editorial decision.
Steve: Why don't they own up and tell people what they are doing?
Alex: In the advertising cover business, there is no issue in doing this. .... The best lesson for us is to know that it's happening.
Steve: They should put a disclaimer on the photo because I'm sure the general public is not aware this is happening and it's a lie.
Joseph: Does it really matter? You are not selling something based on that photo. It's not like you are selling a diet pill.
Alex: They could put a general disclaimer in the masthead (of the magazine) saying photos are or are not retouched. ... Retouching is big business.
Alex: The camera angle or using a wide angle lens can also alter the reality of the shot.

Make your own camera for kids
These are prototypes cameras that kids can build so they can learn about cameras and learn about photography. Empowering kids in the US and in less fortunate places is great.
Alex adds that it would be great to make it available to schools and for purchases.

Movies About Photography
Steve has a list of movies about photography. Biographies on famous photographers and movies with them in it. Plus movies that Hollywood has done. Movies like "Blow Up", "War Photographer", etc. Plus "Masters of Photography" series is good and some are still around.
Joseph: I like "War Photographer" -- very well done.
Ron: I like "Hearts of Darkness" which is a documentary about shooting "Apocalypse Now."
Alex: If anyone hasn't seen "Born in the Brothels", they got to see it.

PICKS OF THE WEEK
Ron: Picks his blog. He has a recent post about how changing the size of the aperture can affect your photos. You can use this as a tool if you do have dust on your sensor and you can't clean it right away, you can open up the aperture to reduce the effects of the dust.

Alex: My pick is ND filters. A neutral density filter allows you to reduce the light coming into your camera so you can reduce the aperture to get a great depth of field in a bright scene.

Joseph: My pick is www.useplus.com. The PLUS Coalition is an international non-profit initiative on a mission to simplify and facilitate the communication and management of
image rights. The site allows you to create very specific restrictions on your photos.

Steve: My pick is aphotostudent.com (the same place where I got the movie list).
